AKRHI Newsletter November 2024 Issue #5
To Our Circle of Hope,
Life has a way of rushing past us while we're busy making a difference, doesn't it? Between organizing our biggest gala yet, supporting two graduation ceremonies, and planning a new ambitious event, we've been so focused on creating impact that our monthly updates took a brief backseat.
But wow, do we have stories to share with you today! Pour yourself a warm drink and let's catch up on the incredible journey we've been on.
🎇A Night of Magic: AKHRI Gala 2024
Picture this: A room filled with dreamers, doers, and believers, all united under one powerful mission - "Empowering Girls: Determination, Opportunity, Education Success." That was our May 11th gala in a nutshell, but it was so much more than just an event.
The highlight? Dr. Fahima Osman took the stage and had us all hanging on every word. You know those speeches that stay with you long after they're over? This was one of them. She didn't just talk about resilience and opportunity - she made us feel the transformative power of education through her own journey all the way from her childhood in Somalia. The energy in the room was electric as our community members, supporters, and partners came together, not just to celebrate, but to actively participate in shaping futures.
The best part? Every dollar raised during the evening is already being channeled into our literacy programs, vocational training, and other initiatives that are changing lives as you read this. It's amazing how one evening can set in motion a year of transformation.
👩🎓Meet Our Rising Stars: The Nimo Ahmed Scholarship Winners
Remember when you first dared to dream big? That's exactly what our Nimo Ahmed Scholarship winners are doing right now. Monib Niazi from École Secondaire Gisele Lalonde and Sanvi Lodi from École Secondaire Publique Le Sommet aren't just exceptional students - they're community champions in the making.
Watching them receive their awards at their respective graduation ceremonies in June, you could feel the ripple effect their achievements will have on countless others.
🎁When Good News Keeps Coming
Sometimes the universe conspires to help those who help others. That's exactly what happened when the Rotary Club of London Hyde Park District 6630 announced their generous donation. This isn't just funding - it's fuel for dreams, powering our literacy programs and job skills training that are already transforming lives.
The Rotary Club's partnership is invaluable to our mission, and we are deeply grateful for their trust and belief in our work. Their generosity not only strengthens our programs but also inspires us to continue striving for a future where every girl and woman has the tools and support necessary to succeed.
THANK YOU ROTARY CLUB OF LONDON HYDE PARK!
⛰️Six Brave Souls, One Mountain, Countless Dreams
Here's something that gets our hearts racing: This December, six incredible individuals are taking on Kilimanjaro, not just for the challenge, not to reach a summit, but to show the world that when we come together, no mountain is too high to climb to empower young girls and women through literacy.
Meet our dream team:
Yasmine, Master’s student in Family Medicine at McGill, diving deep into global health
Hanna, teacher and Master’s student in Education, shaping young minds while pursuing counseling psychology
Yasin, Honours B.S. Student in Computer Science, coding for the future of technology
Abigail, Master’s Student in Neuroscience, unraveling the mysteries of the brain at McGill
Amelie, Therapy Student at Sheridan College and Human Kinetics graduate from UOttawa, combining human kinetics with therapy for holistic empowerment
Mohamed, our very own dedicated board member, leading by example and showing that change starts at the top
Their goal? Raising $25,000 to fuel our educational initiatives. Every step up the mountain symbolizes the challenges that women and girls face and conquer in their journey towards brighter futures.
Every dollar moves us closer to the summit of change. Make someone's mountain movable.

📰Breaking News: A Partnership That Changes Lives
Here's something that brightens Monday mornings: Dahabshiil International Bank has just opened doors for ten of our graduates from the Naaso Hablood Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp through microfinance opportunities. This isn't just about money - it's about dignity, independence, and the power to shape one's own destiny.
By enabling these graduates to start their own businesses, Dahabshiil International Bank is not only fostering entrepreneurship but also contributing to the overall development of the community. Additionally, the AKHRI team plays a vital role by providing referral services and training, equipping these graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage their businesses effectively
👩🎓The Numbers That Make Us Smile
This year, we've witnessed not one, but two graduation ceremonies that had us bursting with pride. March saw 50 determined souls complete their studies, and October added 69 more graduates to our AKHRI family. That's 119 lives transformed, 119 futures brightened, and countless communities strengthened.
One moment from our October ceremony still gives us goosebumps. An elderly mother took the microphone, her voice slightly shaking but filled with dignity and gratitude. Her words cut straight to the heart of why we do what we do:
"To everyone who has opened doors for our daughters – the donors who believed in us, the volunteers who showed up rain or shine, and the teachers who gave pieces of their hearts to our children – we may not have wealth to repay you, but our prayers follow you every step of your journey. May your families be blessed as you have blessed ours. You didn't just teach our daughters to read; you taught them to dream."
That's the thing about education - it's never just about one person. It's about mothers seeing their daughters write their own stories. It's about grandmothers watching their granddaughters grasp opportunities they never had. It's about entire communities rising together.

🧗♀️Climbing Towards a Brighter Future
You know what they say - every great journey starts with a single step. But as our fearless Kilimanjaro climbers are proving, sometimes that first step is the hardest.
It's the step out of poverty. The step into a brighter future. The step that transforms a dream into reality.
That's where you come in, my friend..Your donation doesn't just provide the resources - it gives someone the courage to take that vital first step. It's the wind beneath their wings as they ascend towards generational change.
Just imagine the impact of your contribution…
One scholarship unlocks a world of possibilities.
One literacy program lifts an entire community.
One vocational training session sparks an entrepreneurial spirit that transforms a life.
The numbers may seem daunting - $25,000 to conquer Kilimanjaro, thousands more to expand our reach. No summit is too high when we work together.
So join us! Whether it's cheering on our brave climbers or fueling our year-round initiatives, every step you take opens doors for the women and girls we serve.
The path to a brighter future starts here. Shall we take the first step together?
